The winemakers give their best wine pairings with your favorite takeaways this weekend

We asked some of the country’s top wine specialists what wines they would pair with some of the most popular take-out choices.

Jess Bell, wine marketer at Villa Maria and Nat Christensen, head winemaker at Yealands Wines, have rounded up their top picks for you to be a pizza fan, craving Thai food, or planning to opt out. for a classic fish and chips.

All you need to do is change in your comfort and get ready to order ahead – if Wednesday night is anything to go by, the wait times are going to be long.

Nat: My favorite take-out is ‘El Scorcho’ Dominos with a cheese-stuffed crust, paired with our Yealands Merlot – it’s simply delicious. The deep and rich fruity style of Merlot, with a lovely smoky charry character from the oak, pairs wonderfully with this pizza. This wine is resistant to spices and complements the cheese rind beautifully.

Jess: We might have tried making our own pizza dough or even just done our best with store-bought bases, but when my local pizzeria opened I knew what it had to be, a Creamy cheese pizza paired with our artisanal Esk Valley Chardonnay. This Chardonnay is a full-bodied white that gives structure and body to support the richness and density of the pizza.
