Former food truck, Gorilla Kitchen has definitely settled in Eden Terrace. Photo / Provided
In the past, in Auckland, it wasn’t always easy to get out if your dietary or ethical requirements involved excluding animal products. Thankfully, things have improved dramatically for the vegan community in Tāmaki Makaurau, with all-plant-based outlets, vegetarian menus with vegan options, and many regular restaurants upping their vegan game as well. Here are a few of our picks (there are far too many to list them all).
East – CBD
On the ground floor of Hotel Sudima is East, a favorite for plant-based dinners. Think spicy garlic eggplant, bang bang mushrooms, sticky jackfruit bao buns and other dishes inspired by different Asian cuisines. Almost everything on the menu is vegan.
Khu Khu – Ponsonby
Khu Khu may be tiny, but he punches way above his ground surface. Fabulous 100% vegan Thai cuisine with bold flavors and charming service.
Gorilla Kitchen – Eden Terrace
Gorilla Kitchen is a favorite of Auckland vegans looking for great cabinet cooking as well as great lunch and dinner options. Formerly a food truck, it has established itself for the long term.
Kind Coffee – Morningside
Brunch in mind? Head to Kind Cafe for a huge selection of vegan and vegetarian options. Breakfast burritos, poke bowls, even a plant-based “thin on toast.”
Pie Bakery – Gray Lynn and Commercial Bay
Vegan or not, if you’ve tried Tart Bakery’s legendary donuts, chances are you’re a convert. Your one-stop-shop for breads, pastries, pies, confectionery and plant-based sandwiches.
Saravanaa Bhavan – CBD
All the South Indians in town flock to this place (it’s a world famous chain) and for good reason. Their masala dosa are some of the best in town and there are so many great vegan options on their vegetarian menu.
The Butcher’s Son – Herne Bay
This Herne Bay favorite has been hugely popular since opening a few years ago. With everything from Buddha bowls to burgers, they have Auckland’s vegans totally covered.
Oldies but goodies
It wouldn’t be fair to make an insider’s guide without mentioning a few trailblazers – the vegan options from Revive, Little Bird and Sunflower Thai have been a crowd pleaser for years and are still hugely popular.
If you need fast food, Wise Boys and Lord of the Fries have you covered. And if you just need a pie (isn’t everyone?), Richoux Patisserie is the place to go. If it’s a total foodie night, why not top it off with some of Duck Island’s vegan ice cream flavors or one of Good Habit Ice Cream’s amazing options.
