National Curry Week is upon us and organizers are keen to rekindle life after a grim pandemic year and urge “for one week only, let’s talk about curry instead of the coronavirus.”
The annual celebration of all things curry returns – for the 23rd time – from Monday October 4 through Sunday October 10, leaving plenty of time for everyone to indulge in one or more favorite comfort foods.
The event encourages people to hang out and dine at local curry houses, celebrate cooking and give the industry a welcome boost after the lockdown, though it also offers a host of ideas for cook curry at home with an official cookbook available to deepen the National Curry Week website.

But the real treat for many will be eating out and Newcastle has plenty of top notch curry restaurants to choose from.
Here is a list of a top 10 in and around the city which according to TripAdvisor reviews, make the best curry.
A runaway first-place winner with 1,891 five-star reviews, this Indian restaurant has been in business since 1981 and is a constant favorite.
The family-run restaurant on The Side, which so many people pass by as they make their way to Newcastle Quayside, underwent a complete overhaul a few years ago and reviews in September commented on its food “extremely delicious”, its atmosphere “delicious “and” awesome “staff.
A reviewer recently wrote: “A modern take on traditional Indian dishes. A light touch with flavors made for delicious food and an authentic menu. The staff are very attentive and friendly – able to tailor choices to suit. I would recommend definitely to book in a busy midweek atmosphere. “
The curry mentions include “the food was on par with the best curries I’ve had” and praise for a “more modern take on traditional curries” with particular strengths being a Saag and Goan fish curry.
Serving vegan street food on-site or take-out from Newcastle’s Grainger Market, this outlet has been featured in other Trip Advisor reviews, also noting with non-vegans for its authentic flavors and reasonable prices.
One reviewer mentioned his “changing curry special that never fails to please” while a recent addition said: “The food is 100% authentic Indian cuisine. I don’t think I’ve tasted anything as good as this. Here. Amazing value for money, amazing portions, great service and great value! Come to London please! “
At this Thai restaurant, located in Forth Banks, a curry-loving critic said he enjoyed âthe best Thai meal we’ve ever had,â which included a Thai red curry; adding that everything was “perfectly done” and calling it “one of the best restaurants in Newcastle”.
One review this week said: “The best thing is the service. Top quality coupled with great food makes this place a must see in Newcastle. Worth booking a weekend getaway as it gets very busy, quickly.”
Goat curry seems to shine at this Caribbean restaurant on Newgate Street near The Gate, with descriptions of “divine” and “delicious”.
One customer wrote: “I decided to go for the Our Curry Goat option – which came with rich toasted spices and scotch bonnet alongside rice and coconut peas”, adding “J absolutely loved this dish! “
One review this week included “Great service, great food”.
Raval Indian brasserie and bar
“Delicious” was the word a recent reviewer used to describe the curry eaten at this Indian restaurant on Church Street, just off Tyne Bridge’s Gateshead.
Others were lyrical about his lamb curry and fish curry, with one man writing, âGoan fish curry. aftertaste. I tried to find a fish curry to compete with those from Kerala and unfortunately was disappointed; so far really the best I have had outside of India! “
Another said: “Not only is it the best Indian meal I have ever had, but the best meal I have ever had, and I have eaten at some of the best in the world,” adding: “It it’s easy to see how they are the winners of the British Curry Awards. “
Another Thai choice, this Heaton Road restaurant has been described on TripAdvisor as Michelin quality accompanied by the words “Food always cooked to perfection, what a gem! This is by far the best Thai I have had and the staff always very helpful and friendly too! “
The best curries seem to be Supreme Curry Chicken and Masaman Curry, described by reviewers as “awesome” and “brilliant”.
Another upscale from TripAdvisor, this spot tucked under the Byker Bridge in Ouseburn, next to the Arch 2 beer den, has seen mixed ideas as to whether the curries were spicy enough or too mild, but fans included comments such as “The chicken and pork curries included in the Goa Thali were particularly tasty, as were the naan and puri breads” and “The food was probably up there with the best Indian I have ever had ! “
One said: “Delicious thali! I was born and raised in South India so I can compare” while a recent reviewer thought “easily the best street food in Newcastle and for me the best, most original restaurant.
This Latin American restaurant on Gray Street in Newcastle apparently can also make a crunchy curry.
One reviewer said “I had a chicken and crayfish curry which was wonderful” and another suggested “try the goat curry”.
Recent reviews include a lot of praise for the staff with comments such as “Great food, great atmosphere and lovely service”.
Nadon Thai – Newcastle
Serving Thai and Asian cuisine in Mosely Street, the food at this restaurant was described by a recent reviewer as “one of the best Thai meals we have had in a while!”
His Massaman Curry scored the best points with diners, with one guest saying in his review: “Beautiful and authentic Thai food. It made me feel like I was back in Chiang Mai!”
The roast duck curry also got a mention and a review included: “The yellow chicken curry and the massaman chicken curry for the main course were very good and very spicy.”
âIf you are looking for a vegan sub for your favorite curry, you have found it!â wrote one happy customer of this vegan favorite who started in Bigg Market but now does take out and delivery and another said: “Best vegan curry and great value”.
Others wrote: “The curries were amazingly delicious and easily the best vegan curries we’ve had” and “Some mild curries for people like me who don’t like a lot of spices and some spicier ones for those. who like it! “
One summer reviewer said: “I am a regular customer of Karma Kitchen and they bring it out of the park every time. There is such a wide variety of food and it is so good that the whole menu is plant based. (although I know a lot about meat eaters who also love Karma Kitchen!). â
